i’m up today at Good Letters, musing about food and singing the Enjoli jingle sarcastically, under my breath. this is what being a med school wife is all about.
speaking of food, yesterday i crocked a huge pot of improvisational chili and cooked a double-batch of my favorite fall food: butternut squash soup (fyi: always add a can of evaporated milk). so the sandwiches and corn flakes are keeping to themselves this week.
also, father lucas, one of my top-ten favorite priest/preachers of all time, just turned me on to Alice Kearney Alwin’s Keep the Feast, an exceptionally well-written foodie blog. i’m not even into foodie blogs, and i will keep reading this one. AND she just did a post on crockpots, which she does not review as glowingly as i would. but then, she knows Sambuca and Pernod, which might as well be hobbits, to me — but the photo suggests they are greens.
and father lucas is the winner of my first (and accidental) blog giveaway! he is the first stout-hearted reader to pipe up for annie proulx’s Fine Just The Way It Is, which he has promised to enjoy until such time as i am stable enough to do so myself. in the meantime, i think he may send me a book of his own. i’ll keep you posted.

i love this post
makes me happy on this lovely tuesday afternoon.
hmmm – never thought about adding evaporated milk to my butternut squash soup. interesting. i usually just use squash, stock & a little nutmeg or ginger.
btw, sambuca & pernod are both anise/fennel/licorice flavored liquors.

i LOVED the blog. thanks for the tip on this one!
(kale is a much darker shade of green)
the pic was of the shaved fennel salad featured in the recipe…
btw, knowing how much you love Cupcake Royale out in seattle, i hope you’ve been keeping up with the cupcake wars at the wash post. they’ve been ranking 2 cupcakes/week. i think they’re in week 5 of 8. so much fun!

the shirt is great. who’s the prettiest? who’s the toughest? who’s the meanest? i’d have to make people say that when they called me on the phone.
