it was a close one, kids. thanks to the East Coast storm, i was almost among the unhappy throng spending this weekend at the atlanta airport. instead, i re-routed through richmond and the wonderful ben drove down to bring me back to DC. so not only did i get a week of work on the beach, but i also got a road trip with my favorite med school student, who took my week-long absence as an opportunity for total mania. by his own account, he spent 14-16 hours a day studying — basically getting a taste of how the rest of his classmates live. and he enjoyed it. yikes.
i left galveston at 3 a.m. CST and i finally walked through the back door of the oakie house at 6 p.m. EST. at that point, fatigue was verging on madness, but the reunion was still sweet: who doesn’t like to come home to friends, a toddler who thinks you’re great, and a dog who is so happy to see you that she does a victory lap on the forbidden couch? i greeted everybody, checked in on jane and bitty in their bedroom, and then i took a long, hot bath and went to bed.
here’s to hoping, now that i’m home, we get some montana-style snow!
